FMU VC alleges defamation by doctors during strike

JARANWALA:

Faisalabad Medical University (FMU) Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Choudhry has filed a complaint with the FIA Cyber Crime Circle against four doctors for allegedly maligning him during a strike and sit-in organised by the Young Doctors Association (YDA) a week ago.

The strike was in response to the suspension orders of senior management at Sahiwal Teaching Hospital.

In his application, Dr Choudhry detailed that during the two-week strike by the YDA, he, along with senior doctors and heads of departments, including Dr Faheem Yousaf, MS of Allied Hospital, reopened the outpatient department (OPD) and slip counter, which the YDA had forcibly closed.

As they began examining patients, YDA office-bearers, led by President Dr Aurangzeb, surrounded their team, creating harassment among patients and doctors.

They secretly took pictures to ‘falsely’ suggest that senior management, including Dr Choudhry, had joined the YDA strike against the Punjab government.

The pictures were posted on the YDA’s official Facebook page and WhatsApp groups without the consent of the senior doctors. Additionally, the YDA members shared a post falsely attributed to Dr Choudhry, stating, “My professional duty deters me otherwise my precious life with the YDA,” while chanting slogans against the government and making victory signs.

The complaint specifically names Dr Aurangzeb, Dr Asad Mukhtar Gondal, Dr Mubashir Ali of Allied Hospital, and Dr Shoaib Shafi of the Council of Pakistan Surgeons and Physicians (CPSP) regional office in Islamabad.

These individuals allegedly shared posts in other online groups, causing mental agony and damaging the VC’s reputation, as well as the prestige and honor of FMU.

He pleaded for the recovery of mobile data, the blocking of the YDA page, and action against the culprits for defaming him.

In response, YDA President Dr Aurangzeb denied forcibly closing the OPD and slip registration counters. He claimed that 4,000 patients were registered on the day in question, challenging the FMU management’s allegations.

He asserted that the strike was peaceful and denied any harassment or blackmailing of the FMU management.
