The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has declared a public holiday across the province to mark the beginning of the new Islamic year.
According to a notification issued by the chief secretary on Thursday, the holiday on the first of Muharram is conditional upon the moon sighting.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, chaired by Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir, is scheduled to meet on July 6 to observe the moon of Muharram al-Haram. The announcement of the new Islamic year will follow the moon sighting.
In parallel, zonal committees will convene at their respective headquarters to make a determination regarding the moon sighting. Additionally, federal and provincial governments have implemented special security measures to maintain law and order during Muharram.
