'Despicable Me 4' opens strong with $120M 5-day debut over July 4th weekend – Box Office

Illumination and Universal's latest installment, 'Despicable Me 4', kicked off its debut with a solid $28 million on Wednesday, setting the stage for a projected $120 million over its first five days, including the Independence Day weekend. 

This performance, despite a critical reception of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, underscores the franchise's enduring popularity among audiences, boasting an impressive 89% audience score.

Directed by Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage, the film introduces new dynamics to the beloved characters of Gru, Lucy, and their children, including the mischievous Gru Jr. and formidable adversaries Maxime Le Mal and Valentina. 

The storyline takes the family on a thrilling adventure, contributing to its international appeal across 52 markets, including Mexico, Spain, and Brazil, where it has already secured approximately $25 million.

The broader 'Despicable Me' and 'Minions' universe has amassed a staggering $4.67 billion globally, with 2015's 'Minions' leading as the highest-grossing title at $1.1 billion.
