Pakistan team’s white-ball coach Gary Kirsten has submitted his report on the team’s poor performance during the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2024.

According to sources, Kirsten has sent the confidential report to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi is assessing the report shared by Kirsten, which details the reasons behind Pakistan team’s poor performance in the World Cup. Fitness, discipline and game awareness are some of the things which have been highlighted in the report, sources added.

After going through the report, Naqvi will also consult PCB officials and former cricketers before taking a decision on the way forward.

Pakistan failed to qualify for Super 8 of the recently-concluded event after suffering defeats against India and the United States.

“The criticism team is facing is justified and we deserve this since we didn’t perform in accordance with expectations. Players who can’t face criticism won’t be able to succeed,” wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan said while talking to media in Peshawar on Tuesday.

Rizwan also said that Pakistan team were disappointed with their performance in the T20 World Cup.

“We are disappointed with our performance in T20 World Cup. There are multiple reasons behind our losses. When a team loses, one can’t say that bowling and batting is doing well,” he said.

It must be noted that India won the T20 World Cup 2024 by beating South Africa in the final by seven runs on Saturday in Barbados.

India joined England and the West Indies to win the T20 World Cup title two times as they won their first in 2007 by beating Pakistan in the final.

The next edition of the T20 World Cup will be held in 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.

Pakistan-India clash

The highly anticipated clash between Pakistan and India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set for March 1, according to Indian media reports citing an ICC Board member.

This match, a highlight for cricket fans worldwide, is scheduled to be held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Furthermore, all of India’s matches will take place at this single venue in Lahore.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already submitted the Champions Trophy schedule to the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to approve.

An ICC Board member shared, “The PCB has submitted the draft of the 15-match ICC Champions Trophy. Seven games will be held in Lahore, three in Karachi, and five in Rawalpindi.”

According to the proposed schedule, Group A features Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, while Group B includes England, South Africa, Australia, and Afghanistan. All participating countries have expressed their support for the Champions Trophy to the ICC.

The BCCI will finalize its stance on the tournament after consultations with the Indian government.

The proposed dates for the Champions Trophy span from February 19 to March 9, with March 10 designated as a reserve day. Last month, the PCB sent the schedule of next year’s Champions Trophy to the ICC for final approval, detailing that the tournament will be held across Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

Lahore will host seven matches, including the final. Karachi’s National Stadium is set to host the opening match and one of the semi-finals, totaling three matches. Rawalpindi will host five games, including the other semi-final.

Still waiting for NoCs

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has delayed issuing a no-objection certificate (NOC) for captain Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Rizwan to participate in Canada’s Global T20, as reported by local media.

The players had sought permission from the PCB to join the league, but the board is currently in discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the league’s affiliation. A decision on the NOC will be made once the ICC provides clarification.

Seven Pakistani cricketers, including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, Asif Ali, Mohammad Amir, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Mohammad Nawaz, have been chosen by various teams for the Global T20 Canada. Babar, Asif Ali, Amir, and Rizwan will play for the Vancouver Knights, whereas Shaheen and Nawaz will be part of the Toronto Nationals. Iftikhar Ahmed will join the Bangla Tigers Mississauga.
