The 2024 BET Awards took a political turn as Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance via a pre-taped segment funded by the Biden/Harris campaign.

Harris, dialing in from her residence, joined forces with awards show host and fellow Howard University alum, Taraji P. Henson, who was backstage at the event.

The conversation quickly delved into significant issues facing the nation.

Henson expressed her concerns about the upcoming presidential election, highlighting threats to women’s reproductive rights and the integrity of the Supreme Court.

“Our basic freedoms are being tested, Madame VP!” Henson emphasized, seeking insights from Harris's travels across the country.

Harris responded affirmatively, acknowledging the gravity of the moment. “Yeah, girl I’m out here in these streets, and let me tell you — you’re right, Taraji, there is so much at stake in this moment,” the Vice President stated, pointing out that most Americans support freedom and equality, despite challenges from extremists.

The conversation also covered the broader attacks on fundamental American freedoms, including the right to vote, LGBTQ+ rights, gun violence prevention, and women’s autonomy over their own bodies.

Harris criticized the opposition, led by former President Donald Trump and his followers, for posing a threat to democracy.

Adding to the political discourse of the night, Henson urged the audience to stay vigilant and informed, particularly about a new Supreme Court ruling that could affect homelessness, and the conservative Project 2025 plan, which aims to reshape U.S. governance.

The segment concluded with a cultural nod as Henson paid tribute to Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" during her performance, emphasizing the evening’s theme of resilience and resistance.

This appearance by Harris came shortly after a debate performance by President Biden, which drew criticism and concern from various quarters about his campaign’s direction.
