SEOUL: The commander of US Forces Korea, Walter Sharp said that the joint US- South Korean troops are ready to fight against North Korea if deterrence failed.

He said that the alliance is well positioned to deter North Korean provocations and aggression, and is also ready to fight and win, should that deterrence fails.

Tensions escalated on the Korean peninsula after a North Korean submarine torpedoed a South Korean warship near the disputed sea-border. North Korea denied involvement in the Cheonan sinking and issued a warning to go to war if the South imposed any sanctions and if the United Nations took actions to punish it for the sinking.

The South announced its own reprisals and wants the United Nations Security Council to censure the North.
