Sophia Bush discussed a significant revelation about her sexuality following her divorce from Grant Hughes. In an episode of her "Work in Progress" podcast, Bush, 41, shared that a friend helped her see that she might not “like men” after observing the difficulties in her marriage. Recalling the moment, Bush said, "One of my best friends looked at me and was like, 'I gotta say, that was just painful to watch, and I’m so glad you’re getting out of it.'"

The friend further suggested that Hughes, whom Bush married in June 2022, was "not the right person for her" and added, "Also, I don’t actually think you like men."

Bush explained that she had fallen in love with a woman, a "beautiful French exchange student," during her teenage years. Despite this, she hesitated to identify as bisexual, feeling constrained by her predominantly male dating history, which included high-profile relationships with actors like Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty.

"The queer community has been my home and is the home of my whole family since I was old enough to understand," Bush said. She reflected on her family's openness about sexuality, noting, "Uncle Tony had a boyfriend and not a girlfriend."

This realization led Bush to embrace her true self, concluding, "Maybe I just get to like who I like." In October 2023, Page Six confirmed that Bush began dating professional soccer player Ashlyn Harris, following Harris's divorce from Ali Krieger.

Bush officially identified as queer in an essay for Glamour magazine, expressing her happiness and stating, "My sexuality exists on a spectrum." She added, "I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great."

Bush and Harris made their red carpet debut in April, addressing engagement rumors that arose in May. Bush shared her joy, saying, "I get that it’s new for y’all to see me so happy and so embodied. It’s new for me too. How lucky am I?"
