My Old Ass trailer: Aubrey Plaza stars in Sundance hit comedy

Aubrey Plaza stars in the Sundance hit comedy ‘My Old Ass’ where she advises her younger self.

The first trailer for “My Old Ass,” featuring Aubrey Plaza, has been released. This coming-of-age comedy, which premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, features Plaza as a middle-aged version of 18-year-old Elliot Labrant, played by Maisy Stella, known for her role in "Lennon & Maisy."

The film is set during the summer before Elliot heads to college in Toronto. The trailer shows Plaza appearing to the younger Elliot, who is tripping on shrooms in the woods. Initially skeptical, Elliot questions the vision: “You’re me? I don’t have a gap in my teeth,” to which Plaza's character responds, “Yeah, wear your retainer.”

Throughout the film, the older Elliot advises her younger self to be kinder to her mother, spend more time with her brothers, and avoid falling in love with anyone named Chad. This advice leads to a comedic journey of self-discovery as the younger Elliot encounters the very boy she was warned about. At one point, the younger Elliot remarks, “I’m actually kind of hot for middle age,” prompting the older Elliot to retort, “I’m 39 years old. That’s not middle-aged. I’m a very young adult.”

Amazon MGM acquired “My Old Ass” for $15 million in one of this year’s biggest Sundance sales. The studio plans a limited theater release on September 13, followed by a national rollout. The film was produced by LuckyChap, co-founded by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, along with Scythia Films and Indian Paintbrush.

Directed and written by Megan Park, known for her role in “Secret Life of the American Teenager,” this is her second feature film following the 2021 release of “The Fallout,” which premiered at South by Southwest and was later acquired by HBO Max.

At the Sundance premiere, Park shared her vision for the film, stating, “I kept thinking about this idea: there was a time when you did something like play pretend with your friends, and then you just never did it again. That made me really emotional. I also wanted to immerse myself in a joyful film and something that made people feel nostalgic for an easier, simpler time in life. Because life can be hard and shitty sometimes.”
