The long-anticipated fourth installment of Ice Cube's popular 'Friday' movie series is finally seeing progress, thanks to a shake-up in Warner Bros.' executive ranks.
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s Flavor Flav’s Flavor of the Week, the 'Boyz n the Hood' star disclosed that the change in leadership has revitalized the project.
“We’re working on it,” Cube confirmed. “We finally got some traction with Warner Bros. They have new leadership, my man Mike De Luca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Player’s Club, and All About the Benjamins, you know, Mike De Luca was there.”
Cube expressed his enthusiasm about De Luca’s support, crucial for reigniting the 'Friday' series.
"So now he’s running Warner Bros., and he’s like, you know him and my man Michael Gruber [are] like, ‘What the f--- ‘s going on with Friday, man? Let’s get this s--- back online!’”
However, the actor and rapper also touched on a bittersweet note, lamenting the loss of several key cast members who have passed away since the release of the last film, 'Friday After Next' in 2002.
"I was a little hot because they’d took so long because, you know, John Witherspoon passed away, Tiny passed away, A.J. Johnson passed away," he remarked.
The absence of these beloved actors adds a layer of urgency and poignancy to the sequel’s production.
Cube's film legacy, bolstered by his work on the 'Friday' series where he served as a screenwriter and actor, has significantly shaped his career.
The original 'Friday' film not only established him as a credible force in the film industry but also helped catapult Chris Tucker’s career.
Looking ahead, Cube hopes to bring Tucker back for the final chapter.
“We’re still trying to get Chris to do it,” he stated in 2017. "I can’t make Chris do it, but fans can hit him up."
With new momentum behind the project, fans are hopeful that the fourth 'Friday' will soon materialize, honoring the past while celebrating the franchise's enduring appeal.
