Eddie Murphy has confirmed that a fifth Shrek movie and a spinoff focusing on his character Donkey are in the works. This announcement comes after years of rumors and a post-credits scene in "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," which hinted at the continuation of the Shrek franchise.

Murphy, who has voiced Donkey for nearly 25 years, revealed this development while promoting his new Netflix film, "Axel F." He said, “I started recording Shrek, I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next," according to Collider.

DreamWorks had reportedly eyed a 2025 release date for "Shrek 5" back in November, although the project has faced numerous delays over the past decade. Despite the long hiatus since "Shrek Forever After," rumors of a reboot have been dispelled, with the studio opting to continue the original storyline, fueled by the success of "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" as reported by ComicBook.

The Shrek franchise, based on William Steig's picture book "Shrek!," launched in 2001 and includes four feature films, two "Puss in Boots" spinoffs, and various short movies and holiday specials. The return of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy to their iconic roles is expected to be a significant draw for fans.
