Billie Eilish continues to be candid about the challenges of growing up in the public eye. In a recent interview with Lana Del Rey for Interview magazine, the 22-year-old singer delved into the "frustrating" aspects of her fame.
Eilish rose to stardom at 14 with her hit "Ocean Eyes" and has since achieved immense success, winning three Grammys for her debut album. However, she confessed to Del Rey that the constant scrutiny and pressure to explain herself have been difficult.
"It's so weird to grow up and change in front of the world," Eilish shared. "The craziest part is discovering things about myself and then suddenly, everyone else knows, and I don't even have a second to think about how it makes me feel."
Del Rey, who also experienced early fame, empathised with Eilish, acknowledging the challenges of evolving in the public eye. She shared how she used some negative comments to her advantage, but ultimately agreed that the experience is a "rebirth."
Eilish expressed her frustration with feeling the need to constantly explain and defend herself against rumours and misunderstandings. She found that trying to justify herself only made things worse, leading her to prematurely share things she wasn't even fully confident about.
"It's so f---ing scary, because everything is written in stone," Eilish lamented.
The conversation between Eilish and Del Rey sheds light on the unique challenges faced by young artists who grow up in the spotlight. It highlights the pressure to maintain a certain image, the difficulty of navigating personal growth under public scrutiny, and the struggle to protect one's sense of self in the face of constant judgement.
