T20 World Cup 2024: Scenarios for Pakistan to qualify for Super 8

For Pakistan to advance, they must win their upcoming matches against Ireland and Canada

KARACHI:

Pakistan finds themselves in a precarious position in the T20 World Cup 2024 after suffering back-to-back defeats.

Their chances of progressing to the Super Eight stage hinge not only on winning their next two matches but also on the outcomes of other teams' games.

This reliance on external results is a familiar criticism leveled at the team in ICC tournaments.

In Group A, Pakistan is competing against India, the US, Canada, and Ireland. With zero points from their previous two matches against the US and India, Pakistan faces an uphill battle. India and the US currently lead the group with 4 points each.

For Pakistan to advance, they must win their upcoming matches against Ireland and Canada, while also hoping for the US to lose their remaining games against India and Ireland.

Even if Pakistan manages to win both matches, they'll need a superior net run rate compared to the US to secure a spot in the Super Eight stage.

The losses Pakistan suffered were closely contested affairs, with one match decided in a Super Over and the other ending in a narrow defeat to India by six runs.

Despite a strong bowling performance that restricted India to 119 runs, Pakistan fell short in their chase. Jasprit Bumrah's 3-14 in four overs proved pivotal in India's victory.

In the match against the US, Pakistan faced another tight contest, ultimately losing in the Super Over by five runs.

Mohammad Amir's bowling limited the US to 18-1 in their Super Over, but Pakistan could only manage 13-1 in response.

These losses have disappointed Pakistani fans who had high hopes for their team's success in the tournament.
