RAWALPINDI:

A motorway police inspector has been suspended and an inquiry launched following the emergence of a video allegedly showing him mistreating and threatening a truck driver near Burhan on the M1 motorway.

The incident, captured a few days ago, shows the officer approaching the truck with a rifle in hand. The footage, now circulating widely, depicts the truck driver and his crew documenting the encounter.

"Look, they are pulling out a weapon on us and threatening to shoot us. Issuing a fine is their right, but how are they enforcing the law like this?" they are heard saying.

As the video progresses, the inspector is seen attempting to snatch the driver’s mobile phone. Subsequently, he hands the rifle to a colleague and calls for assistance via wireless communication.

In response to the video's circulation, motorway police authorities have suspended the inspector involved. A spokesperson for the motorway police confirmed that after issuing a fine, the officer attempted to intimidate the driver.

Upon learning of the incident, the M1 sector commander formed a committee, led by a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), to investigate the matter. The inspector was suspended, and an inquiry was initiated.

“If the officer is found guilty, strict action will be taken according to the law,” the spokesperson stated. He further emphasised that the motorway police are renowned for their courteous behaviour and assured that there would be no compromise on this standard.
