Pakistani law students arrive in Netherlands for International Moot Court Competition

International Moot Court Competition aims to enhance students' understanding of ICC operations

KARACHI:

A four-member delegation of final-year law students from Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto University of Law (SZABUL) of Karachi has arrived in the Netherlands to participate in the International Bar Association (IBA) International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition 2024.

The team, comprising Mehboob Irshad, Muhammed Ali, Shahid Hussain, and Fatima Sumaiya, is set to participagte in the competition.

The moot court competition, held from May 31 to June 7 aims to enhance students' understanding of courtroom procedures and ICC operations.

Participants present written and oral arguments in a fictitious case, offering them a unique opportunity to experience presenting legal arguments before expert panels.

These panels include judges from international courts, professors of international criminal law, and other legal professionals.

Addressing fundamental issues in international criminal law, the competition includes a written round and an oral round, where teams assume roles as prosecutors, legal representatives of victims, and defense counsel.

They draft memorials evaluated by legal experts to advance to subsequent rounds and compete for various awards, such as the IBA Best Oralist Award and the Best Memorial Award.

During this week-long event, students engage in educational and social programs, including side events with ICC officials and other key stakeholders in international justice.

Representing Pakistan, these students are making their university and country proud on the international stage. Their selection for this competition highlights their exceptional skills and dedication to the field of law.
