The Notorious B.I.G. allegedly wanted to leave Sean 'Diddy' Combs’ Bad Boy Records prior to death

After Biggie's death, Rolling Stone wanted to feature him on the cover, but Combs insisted on taking the spot himself.

In the months leading up to his tragic death in 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. was reportedly planning to part ways with Bad Boy Records and Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

According to a Rolling Stone report, the situation was detailed as part of a wider investigation into Diddy, who is facing multiple allegations. Biggie's lawyers were reportedly concentrating on reclaiming his publishing rights at the time.

“I will never give it up until I’m dead and my bones are crushed into powder,” Combs told the lawyers, according to "The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop," as cited by Rolling Stone.

Hip-hop photographer Monique Bunn confirmed the rumor, stating,  “[Biggie] was absolutely about to leave Puff. I know for a fact [because] he told me that.” Another source informed the outlet,  “Everybody wanted to leave Puffy. Everybody leaves him.”

Former Bad Boy partner and president Kirk Burrowes mentioned that Rolling Stone approached Combs after Biggie's death, intending to feature Biggie on the cover. However, Combs insisted on taking the spot himself.

“I was telling Sean, ‘Let’s make it Biggie. You still have a chance [for a cover in the future]. He’s like, ‘No, he’s dead. I’m putting out [Combs’ debut album No Way Out] in July. I need to be on the cover of Rolling Stone,” Burrowes stated.
