Dune: Part Two Home Release: Editor Joe Walker on cutting the sequel, and Dune: Messiah

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," the biggest movie of 2024, has arrived on home video formats, including 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. TheWrap spoke with editor Joe Walker about the editing process, including the difficult decision to cut Tim Blake Nelson's character, and the early stages of "Dune: Messiah."

Walker found editing the sequel liberating as the groundwork had been laid in the first film, allowing for a focus on action and adventure while still nurturing the intimate and human aspects of the story. He described the process as balancing the delicate stories with the massive desert landscape.

Editing began during filming, with Walker receiving footage from the camera and sound departments as it was shot. He worked closely with Villeneuve, reviewing sequences together and discussing options for visual effects.

One of the early challenges was the arena scene, which was the first material the studio saw. This scene introduced Feyd, played by Austin Butler, and featured a unique infrared look that gave the characters a distinct appearance.

When asked about Tim Blake Nelson's cut character, Walker explained that such decisions are never made lightly. He emphasised the importance of story-first editing, sometimes sacrificing even months of planning and days of filming to ensure the audience's journey remains compelling.

Although "Dune: Messiah" is still in the early stages, Walker has already started discussing it with Villeneuve. He shared insights into his involvement in the pre-production process, receiving the script, concept art, and storyboards, and offering his thoughts before filming begins.

Walker praised the updated portrayal of Chani in "Dune: Part Two" and expressed excitement for the continued evolution of the script as they move into the next instalment.
