Opposition voices demanded immediate action, decrying the apparent favouritism towards the elite class.
The issue was brought to light during a session of the House through an adjournment motion by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) leader, Amjad Ali Javed. Speaker Punjab Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, expressed astonishment at the unfolding situation, prompting calls from opposition lawmakers for decisive action.
Opposition members condemned the stark contrast between exorbitant fees charged to the common citizenry and the nominal amount granted to the elite for gymkhana leases.
PML-N representatives highlighted the disparity, pointing out the Lahore gymkhana's hefty membership fees juxtaposed with the nominal lease fee of Rs417.
In response, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, admitted to being unaware of the lease details, indicating that it fell under a department of the Punjab government.
Speaker Khan directed the minister to furnish a comprehensive report by the next session.
In addition to the gymkhana lease issue, the Opposition criticized the government's introduction of a Defamation Bill in the presence of existing legislation.
Speaker Khan urged the Opposition to submit their proposed amendments in due course. The House adjourned with plans to reconvene on May 16 at 2 pm.
Defamation Bill Concerns
Assembly Speaker Punjab Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan engaged in discussions with representatives from prominent journalist organisations, including CPNE, PBA, APNS, AMEND, and PFUJ.
The meeting centred on concerns raised regarding the Defamation Bill 2024.
Journalists conveyed their apprehensions regarding the bill, emphasising the need for mutual consultation among stakeholders.
Speaker Khan assured the delegation that the bill differed from previous legislation, underscoring the government's commitment to safeguarding journalists' rights.
