Chris Pine says losing his role in “The O.C.” because of acne gave him ‘a little bit of PTSD’

The actor revealed that this was one of his “most traumatic points” of his life.

Chris Pine has responded to a casting director who said that his acne impacted his audition for “The O.C.” 

In a recent appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Pine discussed casting director Patrick Rush’s comments from the 2023 book “Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History,” where it was revealed Pine lost the role of Ryan Atwood due to “bad skin problems,” according to a report by the AV Club.

Pine admitted, “It was one of the most traumatic points of my life, but it is my story.”

He revealed that losing the role gave him a “little bit [of] PTSD,” adding, “The man didn’t have to talk about it. I mean, it’s his prerogative.” 

The “Poolman” star revealed he had “awful skin as a teenager” and again after college.

“Look, I was going out for ‘The O.C.,’ a teenage melodrama,” he explained. “I can understand why they wanted pretty people doing pretty things. And bad acne is not a key to [success].”

Despite the missed opportunity, Pine shares, “I don't want to say I'm grateful for not having landed the job, but I'm alright.”

The “Don’t You Worry Darlings” star also highlighted the often-downplayed impact of acne, “It's no fun having bad skin,” Pine said. “It can be tremendously debilitating and really, seriously, emotionally incapacitating.”

The actor left a message for those struggling with skin conditions, “So, for anyone out there that is experiencing that: I get you, I hear you, I’ve been there, I know it.

“I know how depressing it can be and the kind of depths of sorrow it can drag you to, but there is a brighter day.”
