Netflix's “Beckham” documentary sparked an online storm when David Beckham responded to his wife, Victoria Beckham, describing their upbringing as working-class with a surprise remark: “Be honest!”
During Netflix’s Emmys For Your Consideration Event on May 5, David revealed his interruption initially made director Fisher Stevens “quite upset.”
The football star stated that Stevens had planned a solo interview with Victoria, ““It was Victoria’s first day filming… and Fisher thought that I’d left the house, but I was in the kitchen making a coffee before I went to the office.”
He continued, “I put the set of headphones on, and all of a sudden I heard my wife go, ‘Well, we’re down to earth.’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no.’ As soon as I heard her say, ‘We’re working class,’ I stuck my head in and I was like, ‘Be honest.’”
When Victoria responded, “I am being honest,” David asked, “What car did your dad drive you to school in?” to which the former Spice Girl ultimately conceded, admitting it was a Rolls-Royce.
Director Stevens’ initial frustration quickly subsided after the scene. He revealed that David's remark, which quickly became an internet meme, was “gold” for the documentary.
“It worked out. Thank God the cameraman caught David, and then to [editor] Michael [Harte], I did say, ‘We have gold, I think,’” he said at the Netflix event.
David referenced the “be honest” moment in January on Instagram. In a photo of his family meal with Victoria and her parents, he jokingly said in the caption, “Just a nice casual New Year's Eve lunch at The Ritz ❤️ @victoriabeckham.”
He added, “‘Very working class My mother & father in law left in there Roll's.’”
The Beckhams themselves seem to be taking the whole thing in stride. David playfully referenced the moment on social media, and the couple even recreated it for a recent commercial.
