Beacon of hope

In the realm of public health, amidst the challenges and complexities that Pakistan faces, there exists a cadre of highly skilled and dedicated professionals who have tirelessly worked towards the betterment of society. These individuals, often overlooked, are the true architects of change, striving for a healthier and prosperous Pakistan. Among them stands Dr Shahzad Baig, a beacon of hope in the fight against polio.

Dr Baig’s inclusion in Time magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People in Health’ list is not merely a recognition of his personal achievements but a testament to the collective efforts of Pakistan’s public health community. As the coordinator of the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication, Dr Baig has been at the forefront of the battle against polio by orchestrating the deployment of 400,000 vaccinators and 80,000 security personnel, ensuring the inoculation of more than 90 million children in 2024 alone. Prior to his tenure in Pakistan, he served as a technical adviser to Nigeria’s polio eradication effort, which culminated in the country being declared polio-free in 2020. Dr Baig is steadfast in his mission to replicate Nigeria’s success in Pakistan. However, he is not alone in this endeavour. He stands alongside a cohort of dedicated professionals, all united in their commitment to effecting positive change in Pakistan. Unfortunately, many talented individuals, disillusioned by systemic hurdles and limited resources, have either been repressed within the country or have chosen to pursue careers outside Pakistan, leaving behind a void.

Such a situation calls for a conducive environment for professionals to thrive and contribute to Pakistan’s progress. This entails not only acknowledging their contributions but also providing tangible incentives and support mechanisms to encourage them to remain and work in the country. Such professionals should be at the helm of affairs, leading the country towards prosperity and ridding us of this debilitating polio disease once and for all. If given a chance, they can do wonders.
