A police constable, assigned to the judicial wing, was shot dead in the Gwalmandi area of Lahore on Thursday.

Police officials confirmed that the constable, identified as Ghulam Rasool, was shot in the chest and was declared dead on arrival at Mayo Hospital's emergency ward.

The local police conducted an operation in the area following the incident.

This is the third attack on police officials in the provincials capital and till now, no group has accepted responsibility. However, initial investigations suggest that the attacks have been carried out by a banned militant outfit.

Last year, a wave of similar targeted attacks were observed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The same pattern is being replicated in Punjab.

A report by NACTA recently revealed that over 100 targeted attacks on police, including the siege of the Bannu CTD complex and an attack in DI Khan, resulted in the martyrdom of over a dozen security personnel. The attacks were claimed by the TTP.

The report mentions that only one attack on law enforcement agencies was reported in Punjab compared to 624 in K-P during the last year. Since 2022, an upward trajectory has been reported in targeted attacks, especially on police personnel in Punjab.

Over a dozen attacks on cops, especially on border police posts, have been reported in 2024.
