Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza, recognised for his powerful coverage of the violence in Gaza city, has TIME100 Gala as a platform to advocate for Palestinian freedom.
He also spoke about recent solidarity encampments at US universities, expressing gratitude for students seeking to educate themselves on the situation.
Sharing his experiences visiting Columbia and NYU at the invitation of their journalism schools, Azaiza said, "It was an honor for me to raise awareness about what is going on in my country."
He passionately conveyed the human cost of the conflict: "We are humans... fighting for our freedom. My people are getting killed... struggling to find food, shelter... suffering." Azaiza also mourned the loss of over 100 journalist colleagues in the conflict.
Emphasizing the vital role of journalism, he asserted, "Journalists should be protected everywhere in the world... should not be afraid... or threatened to be killed." He concluded his interview with a powerful call: "Free Palestine."
The TIME100 Gala celebrates influential figures and provides a platform for meaningful dialogue.
