Squash triumph

The recent triumph of Pakistani squash players at the Australia Junior Squash Championship 2024 has reignited hopes and promises a resurgence in a sport that once held national pride. In an extraordinary display of skill and determination, Pakistani athletes secured gold and bronze medals across various categories.

The championship witnessed Pakistani players dominating the courts throughout the tournament. Their stellar performances culminated in impressive victories. Notably, Mahnoor Ali and Mehwish Ali emerged as shining stars, clinching gold medals in their respective categories. These young athletes exemplify the resilience and tenacity ingrained in Pakistani squash players. Their remarkable achievements over the years also serve as a testament to their dedication. Mahnoor Ali, at the age of 11, has already amassed an impressive array of accolades, including 11 gold medals and titles such as the Asian Junior Gold Medal and Scottish Junior Open Gold Medal. Similarly, Mehwish Ali, a 15-year-old rising star, boasts 21 gold medals and numerous championships under her belt. Their success not only brings glory to Pakistan but also inspires a new generation of squash enthusiasts across the country. Other Pakistani players also showcased their prowess on the international stage. From Huzaifa Shahid’s victory in the Boys U-13 to Ibrahim Zeb’s triumph in the Boys U-17, Pakistani athletes displayed exceptional talent and sportsmanship, earning accolades and admiration from spectators worldwide.

The new crop of squash players is indeed promising as regards our efforts to bounce back in a sport that we once reigned like no other. Players like Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan and before them Hashim Khan dominated the game of squash for years and years before we hit a victory drought that spanned no less than 26 years. The last time, Pakistan won a major title (British Open) was in 1997 through Jansher Khan. However, hopes of a revival are now clearly emerging.

While the resurgence of Pakistani squash is a cause for celebration, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of continued investment in sports infrastructure, coaching and grassroots development programmes. With the right support and resources, Pakistan has the potential to reclaim its position as a powerhouse in squash and other sports on the global stage. It is, therefore, imperative for stakeholders, including the government, sports federations and corporate sponsors, to collaborate and invest in initiatives aimed at nurturing talent and promoting a culture of sports excellence.
