Actor confessed to feeling ‘intimidated’ working with father and veteran actor Nauman Ejaz

In a candid and insightful interview, Pakistani actor Zaviyar Ejaz opened up about his experiences in the entertainment industry, his aspirations, and the challenges he has faced along the way. Speaking with Independent Urdu, Ejaz shared his thoughts on various topics ranging from his recent foray into comedy to his aspirations for future film projects.

Discussing his latest comedy miniseries Rafta Rafta, the actor said, “I picked this project because I have never done comedy before and this was something new for me that I really wanted to do. And it’s a miniseries, nothing long, so I thought it was a good experiment for only six episodes.”

Exploring comedy

Ejaz expressed his enjoyment in exploring this genre, highlighting the joy and interest he finds in his work. However, he emphasised the importance of delivering natural performances that resonate with audiences, acknowledging that true success lies in the reaction of viewers.

The actor went on to describe his character, stating, “I play a boy who has run away from Lahore to Karachi because he doesn’t want to marry his cousin and his mother is forcing him to. Now he’s come to Karachi and his landlady is Saheefa’s character, Savera. He has no money to pay rent and he’s in love with the landlady who is a very strict-mannered and haughty girl.”

When asked about his satisfaction with his performances in comparison to his earlier dramatic roles, Ejaz explained that each genre offers its own unique challenges and rewards. While there may be no direct comparison between the two, he stressed the importance of personal satisfaction in every scene, ensuring that each moment resonates authentically with the audience.

He remarked, “If I compare my own experience of these two years, I enjoyed a lot in doing comedy. And I didn't find it that difficult. But then again, when it will come on screen, then you will know. But whatever I do, I do it with interest and joy. If it flows naturally, it's good, if it doesn't, then people will know.”

“If people liked me doing comedy and I get more offers after this, I will definitely do it,” he added. On the topic of potential film offers, Ejaz revealed that while he has received offers, he remains focused on honing his skills and awaiting the right opportunity to make his mark in the world of cinema. With a commitment to continuous improvement, the 27-year-old expressed his readiness to embrace the challenge of transitioning to the big screen when the time is right.

Sharing screen with Nauman Ejaz

Reflecting on his experience working alongside his father, renowned actor Nauman Ejaz, he admitted to feeling intimidated initially but ultimately found inspiration in his father's professionalism and guidance. He stressed the need to focus on the task at hand and deliver compelling performances regardless of external pressures or expectations.

The actor divulged, “I was scared because I was working with Nauman Ejaz. And there was no father-son relationship with him on set. He told me from day one that I am your colleague on set and I am your senior, not your father. So he kept that relationship with me and I worked on that.”

Calling the experience ‘100% intimidating,’ he clarified that he is able to compartmentalise his personal and professional arenas of life. “When I had to go in the scene with them, I had to shut off my mind and go into the character, and play the character.”

He insisted, “You have to shut out your mind and focus on your work. These things are not important on camera. No one asks you these things if you perform well. It is all about your performance, not who you are and who your father is. This is my opinion.”

Looking ahead, Ejaz expressed his desire to continue working with esteemed colleagues and senior actors, eager to learn and grow from their expertise. He also hinted at the possibility of revisiting negative roles in the future, driven by the positive reception he received for his previous portrayal.

'Karachi ka bun kebab'

The celebrity, who primarily resides in Lahore, shared his fondness for Karachi's vibrant food scene, praising the city's street food culture and diverse culinary offerings. Ejaz maintained, “I love Karachi's street food. And restaurants in Karachi are a bit more compatible. And people in Karachi are very fond of food.” 

Waxing lyrical about the city, he mused, “I like the weather in Karachi. I like Karachi in summer because there is no wind and it is static all day in Lahore. And there are lots of habs. In Karachi, at least after 5 pm, there is a breeze.” He also spoke about his love for sports, recounting his experiences playing various games and expressing a desire to prioritize physical activity despite his busy schedule.

“I used to play a lot. Now, I don't get the time to do anything. But I used to swim a lot, play water polo, play cricket with friends, play football in school, ride, I have also done boxing,” he shared.

In closing, Ejaz reflected on his journey as an actor, acknowledging the mistakes he made early on and the growth he has experienced over time. With a commitment to continuous improvement and a passion for his craft, he remains poised to make a lasting impact on the Pakistani entertainment industry for years to come.
