Islamabad United has clinched victory in a thrilling showdown against the in-form Multan Sultans, claiming their third HBL PSL title at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. It was a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last ball, with Imad Wasim’s composed knock securing the win for United amidst palpable tension. Despite Multan Sultans’ valiant efforts, posting a subpar total of 159/9, their fate was sealed by Imad Wasim’s exceptional performance with both bat and ball. The all-rounder’s five-wicket haul in the final not only prevented Sultans from setting a formidable target but also etched his name in history as the first player to achieve such a feat in an HBL PSL final.
However, amidst the celebrations and triumphs of HBL PSL 9, the unexpected downfall of two-time champions Lahore Qalandars has come as a shock to many. Led by Pakistan’s star pacer Shaheen Afridi, Qalandars endured a dismal season, managing just one win and suffering eight defeats. Their lackluster performance needs a revisit to the drawing board. Yet, perhaps the most glaring issue that marred HBL PSL 9 was the stark absence of crowds, especially in Karachi. The sight of nearly empty stands during pivotal matches between top contenders like Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi was a disheartening spectacle. The dearth of spectators in Karachi, exacerbated by the onset of Ramazan, raises pertinent questions about the tournament’s scheduling and the challenges of attracting audiences during late-night matches.
As the curtains draw on HBL PSL 9, it is imperative for organisers to reflect on these issues and strategise ways to revitalise spectator interest in future editions. Whether through enhanced marketing efforts, revised scheduling or innovative fan engagement initiatives, addressing this issue is essential to ensure the continued success and vibrancy of the HBL Pakistan Super League.
