Despite the claims by the Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab that areas like Landhi and Korangi are free from sewage problems, various areas in Korangi paint a different picture.
In the Union Council 25 Sector 74 of Korangi 6A, a considerable population grapples with sewage-related woes. Most areas have submerged with sewage due to the unorganised sewage system.
Similarly, residents of Korangi No4, Gulshan Hali are contending with issues arising from the contamination of the water supply with industrial sewage.
The area residents have voiced concerns over the deteriorating condition of the sewage system persisting for several months now.
Blocked lines have caused sewers to overflow, spreading an unbearable stench throughout the residential vicinity. The breeding of insects and mosquitoes in the sewage-infested areas has further escalated health risks, with instances of stomach and skin diseases on the rise.
Moreover, the streets have become hazardous, with sewage sludge turning them into marshlands where accidents are a daily occurrence.
The residents refute the mayor’s assertion that issues in Korangi and Landhi have been addressed, demanding his personal assessment of the situation.
Household water tanks are being filled with odorous black water instead of clean water, exacerbating the already dire situation.
The citizens recount their ordeal during the month of Ramazan when water scarcity plagued the area, only to be replaced by sewage water flooding their homes.
An industrial drain flowing near Tanzim Flour Mill has previously caused leakage of water lines, introducing industrial waste into residential zones and triggering severe skin and gastrointestinal ailments.
Despite lodging complaints with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), the agency has failed to rectify the issue.
The area residents call for urgent intervention to address the aforementioned pressing sewage concerns, highlighting the immediate need for effective action to alleviate the suffering endured by the community.
