Three killed, two injured in Karachi grenade blast

KARACHI:

A young man was killed and five others, including women and children, were injured when a hand grenade exploded in the Haji Lemo Goth area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Wednesday evening.

Among the injured, a woman and a minor boy succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

The powerful blast was heard, causing a large number of residents to come out of their homes in fear, while the police and Rangers immediately rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area, requesting the bomb disposal squad and crime scene unit.

DIG East Azfer Mahesar said the deceased 18-year-old-Farooq was the son of Police Inspector Rahman Mirani. Farooq was carrying the grenade in the alley when children saw him and raised a hue and cry. Farooq panicked and tried to hide the bomb resulting in it accidentally detonating.

DIG Mahesar said that the father of the young man was posted at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police Station and was suspended some time ago.

SSP District East Arfan Bahadur said revealed that Farooq was nominated in a bike theft case. He said it could not be immediately determined where Farooq was taking the hand grenade and where he obtained it from, prompting investigations into all aspects of the incident.

The bomb disposal squad reported that the explosive device was of Russian origin and contained 60 to 65 grams of explosives.

The police have taken the deceased's brother into protective custody and a search of the deceased young man's home was also conducted.
