General elections spring up surprises and strange bedfellows. In one such surprise, the PPP has decided to support the candidate of a component party of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) against other contestants, including the one from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), for the NA-232 Korangi constituency.
This National Assembly constituency consists of Model Colony, Kala Board, Malir Halt, Khokhrapar, Jamia Millia, Green Town, Natha Khan Goth, Punjab Town, Al Falah and other areas. A total of 38 candidates are in the run for this seat. The total population of NA- 232 constituency is over one million while the number of registered voters is over 0.5 million, including 315,000 male and 278,755 female.

The notable contestants include MQM-P’s Asia Ishaq, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Taufiquddin Siddiqui, Mohajir Qaumi Movement’s Shaukatullah Farooqui, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party’s Tariq Mehmood Qadri, and Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s Fayaz Ahmad Tabassum. The PPP has withdrawn its candidate Zartash Malik from the race.
Similarly, the PML-N and JUI are also out of this electoral fray, while Ahmad Owais Noorani Siddiqui, who is contesting the election on the JUP (Imam Noorani) ticket, will also be supported by the PPP and PDM parties. Aleem Adil Sheikh, the elder brother of the former opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly, Haleem Adil Sheikh, is a PTI candidate but he will be running as an independent with the electoral symbol of racket.
