Waziristan woman jumps into electoral fray

Abida emphasises need to grant women their rights without violating tribal traditions

In a groundbreaking move for the historically conservative North Waziristan tribal district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, a woman named Abida has defied the odds by filing her nomination papers for the upcoming general elections. This region, plagued by terrorism, witnessed a tragic incident on Wednesday when an independent candidate from PK-104, along with his two aides, was fatally shot in Miranshah tehsil.

Participating in elections is an arduous task, even for male candidates in this area. However, Abida remains resolute in her determination to try her luck in the political arena. Talking to The Express Tribune after the scrutiny of her nomination papers, she emphasized the importance of women’s involvement in politics, highlighting that nearly half of Pakistan’s population comprises women.

Abida credited her husband, a doctor, for encouraging her to step forward and submit her nomination papers. She urged local residents to support and empower their women to participate in elections, emphasizing the need to grant women their rights without violating tribal traditions.

Hailing from the conservative Spalga village of Miranshah, Abida holds an FA degree and has actively contributed to the welfare of her people, particularly in promoting education.

Undeterred by potential criticism, she expressed her commitment to continuing her work, citing her efforts in helping underprivileged students enroll in school.

Acknowledging the challenges of the region, Abida conveyed her gratitude to her family for supporting her decision.
