6.0 magnitude earthquake jolts northern areas, Punjab

Earthquake struck at around 2:20pm in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, says PMD

ISLAMABAD:

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake jolted parts of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir, including the federal capital on Thursday.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said the earthquake struck at around 2:20pm in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 213km.

People in the major cities of Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar reported feeling the tremors, with some evacuating their residences and offices.

Authorities and rescue services are assessing the situation in the affected areas but there are no reports of loss of life or property so far.

It should be noted that severe earthquake tremors were felt across and in Quetta a few days ago.

Similarly, on December 18, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook Islamabad.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad confirmed that the epicentre was in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) at a depth of 133 kilometres.
