Motive behind attack remains unclear, says police

KARACHI:

An accountant working for a leading bread maker firm was shot dead in an apparent targeted attack in the Liaquatabad Underpass on Tuesday morning. Syed Shakeel Sher, 42, was heading to his workplace in Korangi from his home in North Nazimabad, when two men riding a motorcycle came near and opened fire on him.

Sher died on the spot, while his colleague .in the car miraculously remained unhurt. Police and rangers are investigating the incident. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police are exploring all possibilities, including whether it was a target killing or an extortion attempt. Police are making efforts to get the CCTV footage which could help to reach the perpetrators.

The company representative mentioned that the victim was not robbed. Separately, rickshaw driver was shot dead by motorcycle riding armed men near Dow Hospital on SUPARCO Road in the early hours of Tuesday within the limits of Sachal police station. Body of 40-year-old Ghulam Yaseen son of Pir Bakhsh was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, the brother of the deceased, Muhammad Altaf, said Yaseen from Bahawalpur, lived in a hut on an empty plot near Munawar Chowrangi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar. He had two daughters and a son and drove a rickshaw for living. Altaf said that Yaseen picked up his regular clients, two vegetable vendors, Saeed Ahmad and Muhammad Sufyan, from near his house at 3:30am to go to the New Sabzi Mandi on Superhighway.

Saeed and Sufyan told the police that two motorcycle-riding suspects came near the rickshaw and told Yaseen to stop, but he tried to escape. The criminals chased Yaseen and shot him in the face and fled. Saeed, Sufyan and Altaf said they made several calls to the police and rescue services, but no one came. When they went to the nearest police station and informed the duty officer, he too refused to go to the crime scene.

Police reached the crime scene after two hours of the incident, Altaf said. He said that he paid Rs1,500 to the driver of a private ambulance and shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.  According to MLO Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, the bullet stuck victim’s brain after entering his mouth.
