PPP awards tickets to past winners in Hyderabad

Jam Khan Shoro, Sharjeel Inam Memon secure tickets for third time

HYDERABAD:

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced its candidates for two National Assembly and four Sindh Assembly seats of Hyderabad district. The party has awarded tickets to candidates who actively participated in the 2018 general elections.

Former provincial ministers Jam Khan Shoro and Sharjeel Inam Memon secured tickets for the third time from the same constituency, while Abdul Jabar Khan clinched the ticket for his previous constituency. However, the party refrained from issuing tickets for two provincial assembly constituencies and one National Assembly seat of Hyderabad city.

Party sources indicate that decisions on these seats’ nominations will follow appeals regarding the district president’s nomination papers. In detail, the PPP disclosed its candidates for two out of three National Assembly seats in Hyderabad district and four out of six Sindh Assembly seats. Former MNA Syed Tariq Shah Jamote and District General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sahito will be PPP candidates for National Assembly Constituencies NA-218 and NA-219, respectively.

The party also granted tickets to former provincial minister Jam Khan Shoro, Sharjeel Inam Memon, former MPA Abdul Jabbar Khan, and Sanam Talpur for provincial assembly constituencies. However, candidates for NA-220 Hyderabad-III, PS-64 Hyderabad-V, and PS-65 Hyderabad-VI are yet to be announced. Party sources cite the pending decision on the rejection of nomination papers submitted by the district president for these constituencies as the reason for the delay.

The PPP adheres to its policy of prioritising candidates who won in the 2018 general elections for the same constituencies. This approach led to tickets being issued only to those who secured one National Assembly seat and three Sindh Assembly seats in the 2018 elections. Nevertheless, discussions within the party circles have arisen regarding the issuance of tickets to candidates who lost in the 2018 elections, particularly for the National Assembly seat of Latifabad. Some party members argue that this presented an opportunity for new candidates to try their luck. Former provincial ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon and Jam Khan Shoro, both recipients of party tickets, are contesting from the same constituency for the third consecutive time. Additionally, Syed Tariq Shah Jamote secured a ticket from the same National Assembly constituency for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
