ISLAMABAD:

In a surprising turn of events, caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti has tendered his resignation, which has been accepted by interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar.

Sources close to the matter have revealed that Bugti submitted his resignation on Dec 13, and the interim prime minister accepted it today.

The decision to step down, according to insiders, stems from Bugti's desire to actively participate in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8.

They further said that resigning from the position in the caretaker setup was a necessity to participate in the general elections.
The move came just before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced the schedule of February 8 general elections on the orders of the Supreme Court.
