Pakistan surged into the Junior World Cup Hockey quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years on Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Belgium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The stakes were high for both teams going into this crucial match. Pakistan needed only a draw to advance to the quarter-finals, while Belgium was playing for an outright win. The tense atmosphere at the stadium reflected the importance of this game for both sides.
In the early stages of the match, it seemed like Belgium would come out as winners as they controlled possession and dominated play. They even managed to score an early goal in just the third minute of play through a penalty corner. Belgium's goal came from an indirect shot that slowly crossed the goal line by Jack Vloeberghs.
However, Pakistan did not give up easily and protested against the goal claiming that there was a foul committed before the ball crossed over line. Belgium continued to threaten Pakistan's defense throughout the first half with some more close attempts at scoring but could not find another breakthrough.
The second half saw a different side of Pakistan as they regrouped and played with more aggression and determination. Their ball possession improved significantly compared to their performance in the first half which had been lackluster at best.
Despite having some good opportunities, it took until 42nd minute for Pakistan to finally equalise through Arbaz Ahmad who skillfully dodged Belgian goalkeeper on his left before unleashing a powerful shot that hit right past him and landed straight into net making it 1-1.
The rest of game saw both teams trying hard but ultimately unable break each other's defense again leading them towards a draw. This result ensured Pakistan's place in the quarter-finals at the expense of Belgium who had put up a tough fight but could not secure enough points to advance.
According to Pakistan’s team manager Asif Naz Khokhar, he stated, ‘Belgium proved to be one of the most challenging teams to compete against, but we remained committed to our game plan, resulting in a 1-1 draw.’
Khokhar expressed his confidence in the team's future performances, saying, ‘I firmly believe that our players will continue to elevate their game in the upcoming matches.’
When discussing the upcoming match against Spain, he acknowledged their top-ranking status and skills, but emphasised, ‘Our players possess great skills as well, and we will strive to give them a tough challenge.’
Pakistan will face Spain in the quarter-finals on Tuesday at 3 p.m. (PST), while India will face The Netherlands on the same day.
In the other two quarter-finals, Australia will face France, while Argentina will face Germany.
