ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up the appeal of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif against his conviction in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference and the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) appeal for increasing his sentence on Dec 7.

A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, would hear both the appeals, according to the cause list issued by the IHC Registrar Office on Friday.

Nawaz was convicted and awarded seven-year imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference by an accountability court in 2018. He had challenged his conviction in the IHC. In the meanwhile, NAB also appealed in the IHC, seeking increase in Nawaz’s sentence.

Earlier this week, the IHC accepted Nawaz’s appeal against his conviction in the Avenfield reference.
In its short order, the court also referred to the acquittal of Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar in the same case.

The order said that NAB had no documentary evidence to prove the case against Nawaz, therefore, the appeal of the PML-N supremo against his sentence was allowed and he had been acquitted of all charges.
