People scared me: Ali Rehman Khan opens up on 'risky' intersex role in 'Guru'

In a recent episode of Mazaq Raat, hosted by Imran Ashraf, actor Ali Rehman Khan spoke about the intricacies of his career, specifically addressing the challenges and risks associated with his role in Guru. The host characterized the role, wherein Ali played an intersex character, as "tricky," implying the potential impact it could have had on Ali's career despite his established presence in the entertainment industry.

He further suggested that such a role, while artistically rewarding, could have posed a risk to Ali's career. Imran's question reflected the thoughts that might have crossed Ali's mind during the decision-making process. He asked, "These thoughts must have crossed your mind, and people must have scared you as well." Ali agreed wholeheartedly, acknowledging the complexity of the role and the potential impact on his career trajectory.

"I see my seniors and colleagues and my fellow actors who have done good work - they've done very daring roles and that pleases me," explained Ali. "I get really happy...If one should get a role like this, the actor inside says, 'I must do this now. I can do this.' But what you said - there are many voices in the industry who say that you're a hero -"

Imran further probed, "Did people stop you or say no?" Ali responded candidly, revealing that indeed, people cautioned him against taking on such a role. The actor admitted to being influenced by the voices around him, a common experience in an industry where perceptions and stereotypes often play a significant role.

"People said no, people scared me, and obviously, you tend to listen to others," the star shared. "But then I think there were also those voices that were very supportive and they told me that this is your -" 

"Destiny?" interjected Imran.

"Destiny," confirmed Ali. "This is your identification."

This revelation provides a glimpse into the complexities actors face in navigating their careers, especially when presented with roles that defy conventional norms. The discussion sheds light on the industry dynamics where taking risks can lead to career redefinition and societal impact.
