Agriculture experts advised farmers to begin the off-season cultivation of melons, watermelons and other summer produce in tunnels.
A spokesman for the agricultural (extension) department told the media on Tuesday that farmers are earning money by cultivating off-season vegetables in low, walk-in and high tunnels. He added that it was impossible for farmers to grow summer vegetables traditionally during the winter.

However, summer vegetables like cucumber, tomato, sweet chilies, green chilies, pumpkin, sponge gourd, bitter gourd, vegetable marrow, red gourd, brinjal, watermelon, muskmelon and others could be grown easily and successfully in tunnels during winter, the spokesman added.
