KARACHI:

More than six years after the savage murder of the college student Tania Khaskheli in front of her family, a court in Sehwan town of Jamshoro district on Monday convicted the main accused to life in prison.

The additional district and session judge also slapped Rs1 million fine on Khan Muhammad Noohani alias Khanu while acquitting Aali Noohani and declaring Moula Bux Noohani an absconder.

However, the aggrieved Khaskheli family appeared dissatisfied with the decision and told the local media that they would challenge the decision in the Sindh High Court. "My sister was killed and my mother died while fighting the case to get justice for her daughter. But the culprit who killed my sister before us hasn't been given the death penalty," Dua Khaskheli, sister of Tania, bemoaned with tears in her eyes. "We haven't received complete justice."

Tania was killed on September 7, 2017, in her residence in Jhangara Bajara, a rural town near Sehwan, because she and her family had turned down a marriage proposal from Noohani. She was 19 years old at the time of her murder. She was shot dead on the veranda of her house. A bullet which pierced through her head hit a wall in a room. Khanu was accused of even trying to kidnap her when she was alive.

The police apprehended Khanu and Aali 11 days after the incident. However, conflicting claims emerged about the arrest as former DIG Hyderabad Khadim Hussain Rind had told a press conference that they were arrested in a raid near Nai Baran, a seasonal rain-fed waterway in the Kotri area of Jamshoro. Another account suggested that their custody was given to the police by an influential politician at a guest house.
