In a move towards rehabilitation following the aftermath of the 2022 floods in Sindh, Pakistan Railways has decided to revive the Awam Express.
The decision to reinstate this vital service was made after the suspension due to the severe flood situation in 2022, promising a renewed connection between major cities.
The Awam Express, operating on the route from Karachi to Lahore and Lahore to Peshawar, is set to resume operations following directives issued to the carriage shop officials at the Railway Headquarters. Sources within Pakistan Railways disclosed plans to prepare 18 bogies, accommodating economy class, lower A, and AC business class coaches for the relaunch scheduled in December.
The Awam Express is one of the longest continuous running services, covering a published distance of 1,721 kilometres along the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line. The train journey typically spanned approximately 33 hours and 30 minutes, serving as a crucial link between these prominent cities.
Meanwhile, the Shalimar Express, plying its scheduled route from Karachi to Lahore and back via Multan and Faisalabad, has been granted an extension for an additional month.
The decision to reinstate the Awam Express and extend the Shalimar Express route is set to be implemented immediately, sources added.
