RAWALPINDI:

The Hindu community in Rawalpindi embraced the joyous occasion of Diwali with fervor, dedication, and reverence at the temples of Saddar, Lal Kurti, and Gracey Line.

The Shri Krishna Lal Mandir in Kabari Baazar Saddar Rawalpindi Cantt hosted the most significant Diwali celebration, drawing active participation from children and women of Hindu families, all adorned in traditional attire.

The festivities were organised by the Hindu Sikh Welfare Council, with Council President Sardar Heera Laal, Vice President Kaniya Laal, and Secretary General Rangi Ram coordinating special prayers.

Constructed in 1897 by affluent Hindu brothers Kanji Mal and Ujagar Mal Ram, the Shri Krishna Ram Mandir boasts 126 years of rich history.

Initially closed in 1947 during the establishment of Pakistan, the temple was reopened in 1949 and entrusted to the local Hindu community for religious ceremonies. In 1970, it was leased to the Hindu Panchayat by the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and continues to be managed by the Hindu Sikh Council.

Recently renovated at a cost of Rs20 million, the temple stands as a testament to Hindu Mughal architecture.

In honour of Diwali, the three temples, particularly the Shri Krishna Ram Temple, were adorned with colourful electric lighting and flags. Throughout the day and into the night, families, including children were engaged in worship, and melodious performances, and partook in special prasad (niyaz) arrangements.

Special prayers were dedicated to the development, prosperity, and security of Pakistan. The district government and police implemented stringent security measures, including mandatory entry through a walk-through gate.

The Hindu community also ensured internal security within the temple, complemented by the presence of the police outside.
