Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar on Wednesday highlighted the far-reaching economic benefits of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR), a component of the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative, during the Third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.
He mentioned that the KCR is not just about building railway tracks and stations but the main aim of the project is to enhance connectivity and economic vitality. This, in turn, will facilitate increased trade, boost commerce and industry, and generate job opportunities, benefiting not only Karachi but also the heartlands of Pakistan.
The caretaker CM noted that urban development offers fair access to public transport for all individuals and groups in society whereas the transportation system plays a crucial role in facilitating social participation and reducing inequalities.
The CM highlighted the environmental and health concerns linked to vehicle emissions and emphasized the need for sustainable transport systems. Karachi, Pakistan’s economic hub, faces transport challenges, with millions lacking a safe public transport system.
Justice Baqar said that the KCR project under the CPEC will modernise Karachi’s transport network, which is expected to serve 650,000 passengers daily, alleviating mobility and spurring economic growth besides opening job opportunities.
