ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday stressed that the recent floods in Punjab and climate change were timely topics after the catastrophic nationwide floods in 2022.

Former foreign minister Bilawal made these remarks while addressing a seminar on ‘The Urgency of Action: Climate Change and its implications on Human Rights in Pakistan,’ hosted by the PPP Human Rights Cell via video link, said a press release issued by the PPP.

Speaking of the shared responsibility, Chairman Bilawal said “while we represent our party,” these challenges transcended party lines. “They resonate with every person who calls Pakistan home and in many ways, every inhabitant of our planet.

“Pakistan is sadly an epicenter of the climate crisis,” he said while pointing out that the glaciers of the north were receding at alarming rates and the South’s fertile land was giving way to desertification.

The chairman also said that access to clean air and safe drinking water were not luxurious but basic human rights.

The conference was attended by PPP Human Rights Cell President Farhatullah Babar, former climate minister Senator Sherry Rehman, Human Rights Cell General Secretary Syeda Malaika Raza, PPP Punjab General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza, PPP Central Secretariat In-charge Sibtul Hassan Bukhari, Advocate Shakeel Abbasi.
