Police have claimed the arrest of four suspects involved in the murder of religious scholar Mufti Ziaur Rehman, who was shot dead on September 12, 2023 in Block 15 of Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
DIG East Ghulam Azfar Mahesar announced this at a press conference on Tuesday. SSP East Irfan Bahadur and SP Investigation Maruf Usman were also present at the press meet.
According to DIG East, a case involving sections of murder and terrorism was registered at the Sharea Faisal police station in connection with Mufti Ziaur Rehman's killing.
Subsequently, a special team was formed by the AIG Karachi to investigate the murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.
"The investigation, which involved raids at approximately 70 locations, resulted in the apprehension of over 100 suspects. Among them, four confessed to their involvement in the murder," DIG Mahesar told the press.
These suspects, identified as Gul Sher Gopang, Haq Nawaz Gopang, Umeer, and Yaseen, are believed to be actively involved in killing Mufti Ziaur Rehman. One of them hails from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, while the rest are from Punjab.
The investigation revealed that the arrested suspects had been previously involved in numerous street crimes.
Empty shells of 30 bore and 9mm bullets, recovered from the scene also matched the firearms found in the possession of the suspects.
The DIG East further revealed that the entire gang of the apprehended suspects is still operational within the city, and efforts are underway to apprehend its linchpin and other key operatives.
Meanwhile, law enforcement personnel continue cracking down on illegal Afghan immigrants who have settled in the metropolitan city.
Of late, there has been a notable increase in illegal Afghan residents in Malir District, and police are taking action against those who have settled unlawfully.
