Over 7mmt of wheat stocks available

'Carry-forward wheat stocks for the current year reached 1.610m tonnes, surpassing last year’s figures'

ISLAMABAD:

Over 7.886 million metric tonnes (mmt) of wheat stock were available as of September 25, 2023, to meet local consumption needs and bolster strategic reserves. This ample supply will also ensure the availability of affordable flour throughout the country.

Food Security Commissioner at the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Imtiaz Ali Gopang, reported that carry-forward wheat stocks for the current year reached 1.610 million tonnes, surpassing last year’s figures. The government’s proactive approach led to the procurement of approximately 5.889mmt of wheat during the recent procurement campaign, he said.

To date, 830,046 million tonnes have been released to local millers for the production of flour and other wheat-based products, effectively managing domestic demand.

Of the 4.068mmt procured by the private sector, approximately 3.206mmt have been processed and supplied to local markets, ensuring a steady flow of flour to consumers.
