Protest against power outages disrupts traffic

Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway, Korangi Road, Sharea Faisal worst affected

Baloch Colony residents staged a protest on Thursday against frequent power outages that led to the blockage of the Korangi Expressway.

The protesters halted traffic on both lanes of the Expressway, causing significant disruptions for commuters traveling to and from the Shaheed Millat Flyover, which connects Qayyumabad with Baloch Colony. The resulting traffic congestion left many commuters frustrated and stranded for over three hours.

During the lengthy protest, residents expressed their grievances, highlighting the adverse impact of consistent electricity supply problems on their daily lives. Despite lodging numerous complaints with relevant authorities, their pleas appeared to go unanswered.

Upon receiving news of the protest, a heavy police contingent reached the scene and engaged in multiple rounds of talks with the demonstrators, urging them to disperse. However, the protesters stayed put saying they would not give up unless the electricity problem is solved.

The three-hour demonstration, led to a severe traffic jam, affecting main Korangi Road, Qayyumabad Chowrangi, Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway, Mahmoodabad, Sharea Faisal, and other adjoining roads. As long lines of vehicles formed and citizens stepped out of their cars, frustrations grew over the closure of key roads and traffic suspension.

People stuck in the traffic jam expressed their concerns about wasted time and financial losses due to the consumption of expensive fuel during such disruptions. After a concerted effort, police managed to disperse the protesters and restore the traffic flow.

However, it took a considerable amount of time for the queued vehicles to return to normal circulation. Meanwhile, a K-Electric spokesperson clarified that load shedding is carried out as per schedule, and uninterrupted electricity supply is contingent upon timely bill payments.
