How to deal with trolls online, via Imran Ashraf

Actor’s clever reply to a snarky commenter is a lesson in its own right

Recently, Imran Ashraf took to his Instagram to share a video of his son Roham sitting at his feet and attempting to tie his father’s untied shoelaces. He captioned the post “Karam meray maalik ka (Kindness of my creator)”, as a way to express his gratitude to God for blessing him with a caring child.

In the video, the Ranjha Ranjha Kardi actor could be seen smiling, silently pointing to Rahm as he tried to tie his shoelaces, pausing, and then pointing up at the sky in a gesture that suggested that he owes this present of life to God who lives in the Heaven above. For the Raqs-e-Bismil protagonist, this was a heart-warming moment captured beautifully. Many of Imran’s 3.1 M followers echoed the same. But some took the opportunity to troll the Mushk hero for his performance. And Ashraf’s response is a lesson on how to deal with trolls, especially as a celebrity.

Meri phupo bhi aise acting karti hai (My aunt can act like this),” commented an Instagram user on the video to which Imran quickly clapped back, calling out the individual for mocking him and schooling him for also indirectly making fun of his own kin. “Yaar tumharay baap ki bahan hai. Uski tou izzat karo. Social media par bhi nah ichor rahay baichari ko (Dude, she’s your father’s sister. Have some respect. You’re not leaving the poor woman alone even on social media),” responded the Dum Mastam star.

Ashraf unknowingly presents a simple but effective way to deal with hate online, especially in the age of political correctness. The actor’s response highlights his tolerance for criticism and also exhibits how trolls can be left speechless when trolled in return. Ashraf also redefines trolling by towing the line of confronting and respectfully educating. He further proves why it’s not always important to give explanations or defend oneself.
