Asad Umar acquires pre-arrest bail in cypher case

No evidence against Umar yet, will see if any comes up during investigation, says FIA lawyer

ISLAMABAD:

A special court in Islamabad accepted on Thursday the pre-arrest bail plea of former federal minister Asad Umar in the cypher case.

Federal Investigation Agency's lawyer advocate Shah Khawar informed the court that no evidence has been found against Umar yet and he has not been named in the FIR either.

The lawyer added that in case evidence is found against the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) general-secretary the authorities "will see".

Judge Abul Hasanat Zulfiqar of the special court constituted to hear cases under the Official Secrets Act accepted Umar's bail application against a surety bond of Rs50,000.

PTI chief and ousted prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi are among others implicated in the case.

Yesterday (Wednesday), the special court extended the judicial remand of Imran and Qureshi till September 26, 2023.

The FIA was directed to submit the case challan at the next hearing.
