Anne Hathaway’s Gen Z inspired fashion: Here are her 4 best looks

Anne Hathaway has continuously turned up to red carpets in stunning couture pieces and thoughtfully curated outfits.

During a recent interview with Vogue, Anne revealed the source of her newfound fashion inspiration as Generation Z. She confessed that she was particularly ‘switched on’ by Gen Z’s courage to constantly experiment with different aesthetics and unapologetically express themselves through their fashion choices without confining themselves to specific trends and previously followed notions of what’s ‘in fashion’.

1. Styling a masterpiece of combined House codes

Anne’s figure-hugging, all-white tweed outfit for the 2023 Met Gala exhibition titled ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ was hailed by many critics and fashion enthusiasts as one of the best looks at the year’s biggest night for fashion.

Walking the Met steps as a representative of the House of Versace, Anne graced the white carpet in a custom-made Versace gown stitched out of a creamy-white tweed fabric—a type of cloth most notably associated with Chanel. Not only was her look an ornate tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy in fashion and the many years of his fashion designing career that he dedicated to the premium luxury fashion house Chanel, but it was also a subtle nod to some of Gianni Versace’s established codes for his own House.

The floor-length tweed gown was embellished with Swarovski crystals throughout and came with a matching jacket and a pair of fingerless, arm-length gloves. A high, side slit in the stitched silhouette exposed Anne’s leg and ran all the way up her torso, where the fabric was held together with short strings of pearls and gold safety pins.

The corseted top of the gown was adorned with Chanel’s signature motif of white camellias at each breast. Another prominent Chanel house code is the glistening pearls that were incorporated into the dress alongside the Versace staple of gold safety pins. This clever amalgamation of the aesthetics of two iconic luxury fashion ateliers led to the creation of a showstopping look for Anne that will surely go down in the encyclopedia of fashion.

2. Living out Barbie dreams with Barbiecore

A year before the release of Barbie, Anne Hathaway stepped out into the flashing lights of the paparazzi in a head-to-toe Barbiecore look for the Valentino Hauter Couture Fall/Winter 2022–23 show in Rome, Italy. The gorgeous all-Valentino look consisted of a hot-pink, fully-sequined, turtleneck mini dress, which Anne accessorised with matching Valentino Garavani platform pumps and a signature Valentino rock-stud, gunmetal chain-strap mini-bag.

Anne’s monochrome, all-pink, Barbiecore-inspired outfit was likely pulled from the Valentino Pink PP Collection that made waves for its commitment to the vibrant and in-your-face colour that was forecasted to be everywhere in anticipation of Barbie making her debut on the big screen in live action.

While Barbiecore looks have been splashed across our for-you pages on all social media for a significant amount of time now, there’s no denying that Anne was one of the fist few celebrities to embrace the trend in all its pink and glitzy glory.

3. Exploring both colour and silhouette

Anne’s rediscovery of her fashion sense and ongoing style evolution has been marked by her more experimental attitude towards styling, accessorisation, and choice of colour palettes. However, another important milestone in her ongoing journey to becoming a fashion icon has been her willingness to explore more unique silhouettes.

Anne was a sight to behold at a 2022 Bvlgari event where she graced attendees and unwittingly upstaged fellow Bvlgari brand ambassadors in acanary-yellow ensemble by Maison Valentino. The outfit was composed of a long, oversized button-down shirt that elongated, flared, and unbuttoned into an open gown. The almost-androgynous, button-down shirt and gown hybrid was paired with matching yellow shorts that peeked through as the majority of the buttons were left undone.

Oversized clothing has been a staple for Gen Z and an indispensable characteristic of certain fashion aesthetics that are currently trending. However, Anne’s rendition of the loosely-fitted silhouette and oversized clothing trend went beyond the more typically seen streetwear outfits and elevated itself to couture status via the use of luxurious fabric, perfect tailoring, and of course the statement diamond necklace she wore to the high jewellery display event.

4. Channeling Andrea’s chicness

The internet went into a collective frenzy when Anne Hathaway sauntered onto the streets of New York for New York Fashion Week in a laid-back fit comprised of a brown, knitted, turtleneck dress and a matching brown crocodile leather overcoat that immediately gave fans a flashback to the closing scene of The Devil Wears Prada where Anne’s character Andrea Sachs wears something almost identical to that. To make the flashback even more intense, Anne wore her hair in a similar hairstyle with her hair pinned back and bangs covering her forehead.
 

What made this fashion moment even more iconic was the fact that she had stepped out to attend the Michael Kors show at New York Fashion Week and had coincidentally been photographed seated next to Anna Wintour, the Vogue Editor-in-Chief who was the main inspiration behind Anne’s reel-life boss Miranda Priestly.
