UMT secures top ranking status amongst private universities in Pakistan

UMT recognised as one of the distinguished top 150 global young universities, according to Times Higher Education

 

Pakistan's leading not-for-profit private educational institution, the University of Management and Technology (UMT), set an extraordinary example, proving that focus, dedication, and belief in one's abilities can yield significant rewards, both for individuals and institutions.

With modest beginnings in 1990, UMT has risen to become the premier private sector university in Pakistan, as affirmed by esteemed global university ranking bodies.

In its most recent accomplishment, UMT has secured a place among the top 150 young universities globally, according to Times Higher Education (THE), an internationally recognised ranking authority, renowned for its meticulous assessment of universities worldwide based on carefully crafted ranking criteria.

Having published university rankings since 2004, THE is widely regarded as the definitive source in the realm of global higher education. Over the years, THE has introduced various additional rankings to complement its annual World University Rankings. These encompass subject-specific rankings, impact rankings, reputation rankings, and regional classifications.

 

 

Young University Rankings

One of the significant additions to THE's repertoire in 2019 was the introduction of the Young University Rankings. This ranking encompasses the world's finest universities that are 50 years old or younger. These institutions are assessed based on 13 performance metrics, including teaching quality, research prowess, knowledge dissemination, international perspective, and faculty citations.

In the 2023 iteration, THE included 605 universities in this ranking, with 48 hailing from Pakistan. Maintaining its position as the foremost higher education establishment in Pakistan, UMT emerged as the highest-ranking university in the country, surpassing both public and private sector competitors.

UMT secured a position within the 101-150 bracket, signifying UMT's entry into the esteemed league of the top 150 youthful universities globally. This achievement places the premier Pakistani university alongside esteemed institutions like Liverpool John Moores University, IIT Indore, IIT Ropar, and Middlesex University.

Such recognition solidifies UMT's longstanding assertion that its academic and research prowess is on par with distinguished global higher education establishments. UMT achieved an impressive score of 99.9 — a perfect rating — for research citations, clearly indicating the efficacy and influence of the university's research output.

 

THE Asia Rankings

In June 2023, THE unveiled its 11th rendition of the Asia Rankings, featuring a comprehensive list of 669 universities. This edition encompassed 33 nations, with Pakistan contributing 29 universities to the rankings.

Once more, UMT distinguished itself by securing the top position among private sector universities in Pakistan within the Asian rankings. It claimed the 116th spot, showcasing a significant lead over other private sector institutions such as LUMS (ranked within the 201-250 range) and the University of Lahore (placed in the 251-300 category).

 

THE World University Rankings

In October of the previous year, Times Higher Education unveiled its World University Rankings for 2023. This edition held particular significance for UMT as it ascended to the esteemed position of being the foremost private-sector university in Pakistan.

This achievement marked a significant milestone for UMT, underlining its unwavering commitment to pioneering research. Notably, UMT's dedication culminated in an exceptional accomplishment, with THE awarding an impeccable score of 99.9 for its citations.

The citations metric, a key component in THE's assessment, effectively gauges a university's impact on research and its contribution to disseminating new knowledge and ideas.

THE defines this value as "calculated by assessing the average frequency at which a university's published work is referenced by scholars globally." This parameter holds a substantial weight of 30% within the overall evaluation.

UMT's remarkable score of 99.9 is a testament to the substantial influence exerted by its research contributions in real-world scenarios.

Reflecting on these consistent accomplishments, Ibrahim Hasan Murad, a Member of the UMT/ILM Trust Board of Governors, noted that the university has steadfastly adhered to its foundational principle of generating value for both its students and the academic realm.
