From the highly anticipated Barbenheimer to the thrilling Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, 2023 has been a year full of big Hollywood releases; and Hollywood box office figures have been equally rewarding. But when it comes to Bollywood, aside from Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s Pathaan, no other film was able to shake up box office figures - at least not until now.

Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is expected to make quite the waves. Karan Johar’s first film as a director since the 2016’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, is having a successful run at the box office. With a pair like Alia and Ranveer - last seen together in 2019’s Gully Boy, which became India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards - it is reuniting fans of the duo. But it has now been revealed that the actors had significant differences in their fees for the romantic drama.

According to a DNA report, Bhatt, who had a beyond successful 2022, with the back-to-back releases of Gangubai Kathiawadi, RRR, Darlings and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, reportedly charged INR10 crore for her onscreen portrayal of Rani Chatterjee, a Bengali journalist. Singh, on the other hand, charged a whopping INR25 crore for his role as Rocky, a loud Punjabi boy. He not only received more money than Alia, but got a bigger paycheck than Alia and all the supporting actors combined.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which released on July 28 in Indian cinemas, explores the love story between a young couple (‘Rocky Aur Rani’) who have significant cultural differences. In a desperate attempt to assuage their respective families' apprehensions, they decide to live in each other’s households for three months. The film promises to be an intense love story exploring the synthesis of relationships and family dynamics.
